difference between sound driver and emuk1*?

Hi. I am wondering what the difference between a sound driver such as ALSA or OSS is compared to just the emuk* module. The reason im asking is xmms plays without having any sound drivers such as OSS or ALSA on my box (slack8.1) by just using the emuk* module and using /dev/mixer /dev/dsp etc. On the other hand xine a movie player won't use this setup for sound and requires a sound driver such as above. Just bascially wondering if emuk* and ALSA or OSS are considered sound drivers or is the emuk* module not a sound driver?

thanks
