Dial up ISP in the United Kingdom
 

I am using AOL from UK at the moment and those pansies say they don't support linux. Could some one suggest another dial up ISP here in the UK that do support actual dial up networking for linux as well.

You'll be hard pressed, I would think.

Anyone will do though, all you need is all the relevent info from the ISP... dialup number, uname, pass, dns address, and use that info in linux.

I use BT openworld and they say the dont support _anything_ for linux users, even when the line is down! but through talking to them they do actually help out when there is some kind of problem.

I imagine that most ISPs will be the same, ie, though they don't officially offer support to linux users, you will get helped out where possible, your a customer after all.

Unless you cant setup the connection in the first place... but that's where this site comes in handy ;)

im in australia, with optusnet cable, and the support are complete assholes.

You generally find that linux users dont need much support, they only run into problems when they are the first to report line or network outages. the support guys on the end of the line have a habbit of saying 'duh, we dont support linux' you then have to tell them that it WAS working and when you boot to windows it STILL does not work and there IS a problem at their end. But aside from that you make it go the first time and it continues to work for years, unlike windows users who _do_ need alot more support.

Lying about the windows thing is ofter nessersary... Unfortunately.

Thats surprising when you consider that optus net runs on linux. But I expect your really talking to some drone in a call center with a windows answer sheet, you know the type of thing....
1) Reinstall tcp/ip
2) Reinstall isp provided version of internet exploiter
3) Reinstall windoze

I tried connecting to the AOL server by manually setting a dial up connection in windows and using my username and password. Needless to say it would not connect. I suppose the locally installed software (that aol insist on using) must be ecrypting the user name and/or password before sending to the server. I;m not sure this is true but has anyone ever managed to connect to aol using dial up networking?

i don't think its possible to connect to aol without their special windows or mac software. At least in the US, it could be different in the UK

I use WHsmithnet in the UK. and it works fine. i just put the dialup number in Kppp along with user name and #
works fine. i also know that freeserve and others work, if this is anyhelp.

Demon is pretty good, they do surftime, static ip, static hostname, mail by SMTP (as well as the usual options), have excelent nntp and Efnet (irc) servers.

ive got broadband now - but when i was still using dial up i used onetel. ... obviously they dont officially support linux, but it was easy to get the connection working.

they do a few good deals, eg either 1 pence per minute, or £13 a month (if you've got a BT phone line) ....something like that , can't remember exactly.
