Distro? How did you set up the partitions?

Even in virtualbox, the virtual disk is partitioned somehow.
If the /tmp directory is not setup right it could cause that. Virtualbox also has a bug (regression) that sometimes causes disk corruption in newer versions. I assume this is a new installation in which case you might as well try reinstalling. |
