LinuxQuestions.org - /dev/dsp busy? sound not working, games crash

I just upgraded from Redhat 9 to Fedora core 1 tonight and I have been having some strange problems, (though some of them I still had when rh9 was installed). I already did full updates for my system with up2date and apt-get update/upgrade. If I boot into Fedora (KDE) and play a little Tux Racer and it runs fine, complete with sound (something I could never accomplish in rh9). But when I exit the game, I go to XMMS to play an MP3, but it says that either my sound card isn't configured, any audio output isn't working right, or another program is blocking the sound card. So I try to play a movie using mplayer. the movie runs, complete with sound, but when it opens I get the message that /dev/dsp is busy. I close mplayer and go back to XMMS and try to play the same mp3, but I get the same error. And when I try to run Tux Racer, the screen goes black as if the game were loading, but then it closes and I am back at my desktop, running tuxracer from the terminal gives no error messages to clue me in on whats wrong though, (though I did change an option to try to get it running better earlier, before I did that I would get the message SDL parachute, lbreakout2 gives me the same error). So anyway, if I let the computer just sit for 2 minutes or so, I will be able to run my applications with sound again, and mplayer doesn't say /dev/dsp is busy anymore. Tux racer also sometimes works under these circumstances. Is there some way to just get the sound and my games working normally? I've already downloaded alsa drivers and the fedora rpms (through apt) for all of the programs to avoid conflict with the old rh9 rpms.
