/dev/dsp
I compiled a new kernel and am finally in X again. The only problem is that I get the '/dev/dsp Permission Denied' error on X start, resulting in no sound. I went to '/dev/dsp' properties (as I did when first started X under a new user), and set the user permission to my username, but I still get the same problem. I'm loading my sound driver through the kernel and not a module, now. Could that be it? Just a note, the dsp and mixer files are italized now and the properties don't let you change permissions, just the username and group, even when viewing it under the Super-User File Manager.

worked like a charm, THANK YOU! Is there anywhere I can learn more about chmod? I totally do not understand it, but I would like to learn. I've checked out the 'man page', but I can't tell what it's all about...

good info, thanks!
I have one question, though. I get the error again after rebooting. Should I add the 'chmod 666 /dev/dsp* /dev/mixer*' to my rc.local file so it will run on every startup?

Is it changing the permission on the files after a reboot ? That is strange if it is. I guess it wouldn't hurt to chmod the files on bootup from your rc.local script.
Let us know !

something strange to add, when I had Mandrake on this system every cold boot would result in a 'device not found' from 'insmod' on the 'i810_audio' module. Now I have Slackware and am loading 'i810_audio' through the kernel, and it seems to fail every-other cold-boot, resulting in '/dev/dsp..mixer' not existing on every boot. I do a quick reboot and voila, it's there. I suppose this is why the permissions seem to 'reset', the 'dsp' and 'mixer' are recreated every other boot?? I have Crystal Audio (at least that's what the Windows drivers claim), but never could get it to load successfullly. Mandrake automatically picked 'i810_audio' so that's what I stuck with.
anyway, it doesn't really bother me at all. My mind is working so slow in the morning a couple reboots won't phase me, LOL
