i've noticed a few things starting up when i boot my system and i want to know if i need them and if and how i can turn them off.
this is for a laptop that will primarily be used for web browsing, email getting, and word processing (staroffice). it's not at all fast so i'd like to strip the crap. 233mhz 32 megs ram (will be 80 megs soon, hopefully.)
1 . agetty, i've noticed several instances of this running (like 5) and together the consume about 5-10% of my memory. ive checked the man file for agetty and it says that it has something to do with login.
2. sshd, this "provides secure and encrypted comnunications" finegan said that i dont need this but i don't know how to turn it off
3. lpd, "printing daemon" should i have this running, i dont plan on printing anything from my laptop i'll probably just transfer the files to a floppy and print it out on my desktop system.
4 and 5. atd and crond. i have no idea what these do their man pages are a little upscure or over my head.
recomendations on what esle i could do to speed up the system would be appreciated.
Then you probably don't have it installed, it's made by RH. You can comment out some things in /etc/rc.d/ and make the changes that way. Read each file, and comment out the things you no longer want.
