detect bit mode (32 vs 64 bit) for linux

How to detect bit mode (32 vs 64 bit) for linux?
i.e. Is there a way to find out whether linux is running as 32 or 64 bit?

Many distros append something to the kernel name to specify AMD64 for 64 bit machines. Try uname -a, if it says i386, i486, or i686, it's 32-bit. If it says amd64, it's 64-bit.
