Destroyed Xserver

I have seen many threads dealing with this issue on specific terms but unfortunately, it doesn't cover my circumstances. After screwing up my xserver and now being unable to to even get to the gdm, I am now trying to figure out how to repair this without scrapping the whole installation. (I am using ubuntu) I have tried:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

this did not restore my xserver settings. the problem occured when I modified a file with regards to suspending to disk. I can't remember what the name of the file is since I did it long before rebooting and forgot that it might be an issue. any help here is appreciated. TIA

i believe i have narrowed the culprit down to a boched install of my video chip drivers. i used dpkg to install it but now i cannot remove it to save my life. any ideas?
