desktop customization questions
Its been a while since I have used Linux for anything other than web servers so please bear with the stupid questions. I just installed Mandrake 9.2. I have used gnome before but never KDE. I cant seem to switch to Gnome so I am going to try KDE for awhile. Anyway, the questions....

1- How do I change desktop icons? The default icons suck and I cant figure out how to install and use a new icon set.

2- How can I change the background color of the launcher panel?

3- I see allot of screen shots where there are those cool system monitor readings on the desktop and weather reporters and stuff like that, where do you find those?

Thats about it, thanks in advance for the help.

I think you right-click the panel (launcher?), and click something like 'configure'. In one of the tabs you will find something for the backround. It has various builtin colors like green, or you can choose your own.

There are applets for weather and news that can go in the kde panel. For fancy stuff, take a look at gkrellm and Superkaramba. You can find themes for these in kde-look.

1 - go into Configuration - KDE - Look and Feel - Icons. See what you have, if you can't see any you like, go to and get some.

2- what's a launcher panel?

3 - - wonderful KDE stuff there.

Thanks. I found where to change the colors. I found the where the icon theme chooser is in configuration but it wont let me use the sets I have downloaded. I guess there is supposed to be some kind of index file that I dont have, just the icons. Seems like in Gnome you could change each icon individually if you wanted to but I cant find that option in KDE.

If you want to change the icons individually then just right click on the icon that is on your desktop and choose "Properties", when the dialog box comes up you can then click on the icon shown and it will bring up a new window of icons and you can select from those or it "other" and then the "browse" button to find the icon(s) you have saved elsewhere.
