OK. So you click on your custom desktop access button ... what would you like to happen?
Note: I have the same distro as you, so I can probably be exact in my reply. I'm just not sure I understand the question... probably I'm just missing the context. What do you mean by "access the desktop"? What is it about the desktop that you are trying to access?
eg.
The desktop can be manipulated by clicking the icons on the screen - so this is probably not what you mean. You can access the desktop settings from a utility from a screen icon, or a gnome menue launcher, so this is probably not what you mean either. You can get to the contents of the /home/$user/Desktop folder by cd /home/$user/Desktop so this is probably not what you mean either. See my problem? Access, in the usual sence, to the desktop is not normally an issue: it's right there!
wow! thanks a lot for all the information... i didn't mean for it to be so complicated but i guess it is. i'm just wondering what command is used in the "show desktop" button on the panel because i was going to add it to the menu editor as a new item... that probably doesn't make any sense, but i don't know how better to explain it. thanks again!
Oh I get it! Sometimes the desktop gets so cluttered that there is no clear space to click on and even then the desktop icons are obscured ... KDE has a button which, when clicked, brings the desktop to the front. I havn't used KDE in so long ...
I'll have to go check - but have you tried right-clicking the existing button and selecting properties? One of the things wot comes up is the command to execute.
great, i'm glad you understand what i am trying to do... if you right click on the button it doesn't give you any options but move or remove. this is different than most buttons, that's why i am left wondering how it works. thanks again!
IMHO, there is no command to execute, unless you write it yourself, because this probably is a library call. I'm almost sure the specification for this can be found on http://freedesktop.org somewhere.
Actually, it's a DCOP call. Most of KDE can be controlled through DCOP. You can browse and execute the available DCOP interfaces graphically using the kdcop program or from a terminal or script through the command-line dcop program. In this case, the command you want is:
hmm... thanks for all the suggestions, i tried the code here <http://www.kdedevelopers.org/node/view/905> but to no avail. i keep getting an error: object 'toggleShowDesktop' in application 'kicker' not accessible...
