Descriptor limit for a process

Hi,

I am a programming side guy and do not have much knowledge of the linux side. We are running a high traffic website where apache handle as many as 400 connections/second. We are using a lingerd utility which enhances Apache performance. Lingerd is a daemon (service) designed to take over the job ofproperly closing network connections from an http server like
Apache. The writer of lingerd has advised increasing hard limit for the no of descriptors for the lingerd process to more than at least double the connections/second. He advises using the following command "ulimit -H -n 2048". I think currently on our system, this no is 1024. I want to know whether bumping this hard limit to 2048 can have some other adverse impact on the Linux system.

Thanks a lot for your help
