depmod got cleared out?

just now i tried to use my wireless card, but my ipw2200 module wasn't loaded, so i tried to modprobe it up only to find that it "didn't exist". a quick slocate showed me that it did exist as /lib/modules/.../wireless/ipw2200.ko. so i rebooted, no result. then i decided to reinstall the driver. i didnt think it would help since i knew the module was where it should be, but after a make and make install, i see the last line of the install: "depmod -a". i'm pretty sure that's what the what solved it. somehow my cache of modules got messed up and my wifi driver got cleared out of it. anybody know why this might happen? i'm a little worried about hard drive damage because a few hours before this, i tried to put my laptop into sleep mode with this wierd command like "echo mem > /sys/power/state" and it wouldnt wake up, so i had to shut it down hard.

could it have been because of a kernel recompile? it was the same kernel version with slightly different options, but could that have caused me to need to recompile the ipw2200 driver using my current kernel?
