Dell Inspiron Notebook Help

My last post did not go through as far as I can see, so please dont get mad I am reposting.

I was looking at the differences between Windows and Linux versions of their Inspiron 8000 laptops, and discovered that Windows has much more available features. SO I decided that I am going to order a Windows ystem (wait, I have a plan), and then install Linux on it after the fact. but I have a few questions.

A. Does Linux support UltraXGA displays, or does that really need an operating system driver?

B. Does Linux support Nvidia GeForce2 goVid DDR?

Isn't the Windows version more expensive? Can't you just order the notebook with no OS?

Like, what. They give you different hardware? Or are they just not listing options supported by their RH Linux install?

they don't install linux on inspiron 8000s, and the inspiron 8000 is the "mobile desktop" with all the goodies.

however, there's also a latitude C800, i believe, which is pretty much the i8000 (features-wise) in a "corporate" package. if you can get linux on the C800, go for it.

btw, i'm using an 8000 now, but ... shoot me ... i'm using win2k.

They dont give as many options if you have them install Linux. I would do it myself, but then they told me that I then could not order it with all the goodies.

I like Dell, but it seems that if that they may be cool and offer Linux, but they must not believe in freedom and innovation for their products.

I think they are just trying to sell what package they have, because of the cost of individual customization. We just bought 5000 of the Latitudes and I guess we got a good deal on them with W2k installed.

When upgrade time comes around in a couple of years I will own the one I use at work now, and the latest distro will go on it very quickly.

Inspiron 8000

This is *mostly* a linux question. I just bought a inspiron 8000 second hand from a friend and within >10 seconds< of it being in my 'care'. I installed win2k, and Redhat linux. PEACHY. But my network card won't work under windows or linux...

:smash:

I've worked my way through the drivers on the dell website. Alas no luck... Modem is found and works.. but no network card. Anyclues? any software thay would probe an unknown network to see if it is even alive? I'm not even sure what network card it is to be honest... don't have the technical specs.. so anyone with even that morsilen of info would be good!

Fank you anyone!
