deleting remote print jobs

How are remote print jobs handled? Can I delete a remote print job.

I'm specifically interested in cups, but I'd like to know
how bsd and lprng works also.

If I submit a print job, it goes into my local print queue. It
looks like it is then sent to the remote print queue. Is it
possible to delete the print job once it gets there?

In my set up, i use cups to print to a smb queue. It
appears that once the job leaves the cups queue, then
cups doesn't see it anymore.

Is it different with cups->bsd_lpd or cups->cups?

I've looked through the web pages, and didn't see much
that would help.
