Also where does Gnome, KDE, GDM, KDM fit into there?

A Window Manager manages windows - where they go on screen, what they look like.

A Desktop Environment generally puts icons on the desktop, has office tools, etc.

Display Manager - graphical log in program

Gnome - Desktop Environment

KDE - Desktop Environment

GDM - Gnome Display Manager

KDM - KDE Display Manager
