I never use Nautilus, more of a commandline guy myself, but I did just now to see what you were talking about.

Yep - Nautilus created "new file" with permissions 600 (my umask is 022). Looks like that's the way it works in Nautilus. There might be some setting to change this, but not using Nautilus personally, I wouldn't know.

Your FTP server problem is probably a different thing. Same symptom, different cause I'll bet.

Hmm, I was thinking that myself

I only know a medium-sized amount of command line commands so I do everything else with the GUI.
