Decoding of mp3s to wav's distorts sound

Recently I went to burn an audio cd and noticed that after I decoded the mp3s to wavs they are distorted. It worked fine 2 days ago however when I burned an audio cd. They weren't distorted at all. I have tried mpg123, lame, mad, they all make the wav files distorted. Anyone have a clue as to what is going on?

Have you tried decoding with xmms?

The thing is that mp3 and ogg also are lossy audio codecs -- meaning the remove the unwanted frequencies and compress. Hence, when u decode them back into wav (or pcm), certain frequencies are missing. Hence, u get distortion. (But if u play them, they sound better than wav.)

If u want lossless audio format, u can try flac.
