debian_woody_runlevel5_can't switch_consoles

Hi,

i have just installed and configured debian 3.0 woody on a compaq armada 1700 laptop. After editing the inittab to start in runclass 5 [ default 2] the X_Enviroment starts.

Now my problem : I cant`t switch consoles any more just tty0 and tty 6 [ tha xserver].

I am new to debian [ just experience to redhat SuSE and a little FreeBSD].

There have to be any problem with the xserver.

Anyone knows this problem ?
Thankful for any help ...

There may not be a problem. In zipslack, the X window runlevel is 4 and the tty6 console is active, but the others aren't.

Which consoles that are to run in runlevel 4 on your system is indicated in your /etc/inittab file. This is a piece of my inittab file:

c1:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
c2:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

The numbers in bold print are the runlevels that the consoles are active in. Note that c6 is the only one active in runlevel 4. If you wanted to, I guess you could edit the inittab file and activate more consoles. Just put the number 5 in the lines of the consoles that you want to activate.
