Debian mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking

I've been pulling my hair out all the morning trying to figure out Why I was getting this error.

While I did alot of googling and found all kinds of solutions, none fixed my problem.

When I try to mount a NFS on my Debian Wheezy system I was getting this error
Quote:
mount.nfs: rpc.statd is not running but is required for remote locking
So even though I have resolved my problem, I figured I would share it with the web just in case somebody does the same silly mistake I made.

What happened, I decided to configure my System to use Network Manger, so I can use the gnome network manager applet. So first thing I did is I cleared out /etc/network/interfaces as the Network Manager will only handle interfaces that aren't declared there, but what I didn't realize what I did, was take an import piece of line out of it

Quote:
# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
So if you are having this problem and you don't have that in your interfaces on a Debian Based machine, then that is why. I readded it to my network interfaces and boom. Resolved.

So there you have it.

I hope this little piece of info helps somebody out.

This isn't Debian specific, but Unix/Linux specific:

Although I cannot find any reference to this at the moment, I was thought that Unix/Linux machines are networked by nature and as a result they always need a loopback device to function properly.

Yes, you are right, it is more Linux,Unix specific. I just wanted to share this information with everyone, just incase someobody did what I did with out realizing.

Lots of things need the loopback and if you accidently remove it, it might become a hard problem to find. I only found it because I started through digging through my whole system and stumbled upon it.
