Debian locks during startup, please help!

I just upgraded Xfree to 4.2 and restarted, but now it locks up whenever it comes to the point of starting the xfs (x font server). Its really a problem because I can't "ctrl + c or z" do get out of it, and it wont time out. All I can do is ctrl+alt+delete, and what good is a linux system that all it can do is start part way and then reboot? Any ideas on how to fix it WITHOUT reistalling the whole OS would be nice... if you know of a set of floppys that will let me boot in a rescue mode kinda like SuSE that would help. BTW I am new to debian, but not to linux. Please Help!

If you still have Debian boot disks, use them as rescue. The turn off starting X at boot (/etc/inittab id:5:initdefault line, change 5 to 3) and remove xfs at boot (/etc/rcd/rc.3d and delete the link to xfs).

What do I do to get the font server running after I do that?
