Debian AMD64 hang on startup

I've just installed Debian AMD64 on my main box (Intel Q6600, Ati HD4770, Asus P5K) using the DVD install. It boots, but hangs when it tries starting the graphical interface. No reports, no commandline, nothing at all - a nice black screen and completely unresponsive system.

Any ideas how to fix it? Debian x86 works with no problems.

Thanks.

First, did you verify the md5sum of the iso you downloaded (compared to the published md5sum at Debian's website)?

Second, have you tried booting to runlevel 1 or 3? Do you have text mode to work with? If you do, then inspect the logs in /var/log for errors in re your graphics card or drivers.

Then report your findings here.

PS: did the install go well; no problems or errors during installation?

No errors during install. I can boot in text mode using the rescue mode, though it's quite annoying because text mode runs my CRT at the highest resolution it supports and everything is really really tiny. I'll have a look at /var/log then report.
