dcop and root

hey
sometimes I want to run x programs as root but I don't want to log out and back in again. So I try to connect to dcop server of another user.
well I can't. This is what spits out when I try

root@localhost>dcop --user <######>
-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'

anyone know what that means?

dcop --user "<######>"
shoudn't give you a syntax error.

Rule of thumb : unexpected syntax error? try quoting.

can't you just su?

ok I should give a better explaination
sometimes when i want to edit something or move files, I prefer to use konqueror or kate. I am always logged in as a regular user, so I can't edit config files unless I am root. So what I usually do is open a terminal and su to root, and then type kate.
When I tried to do this I got an error
root@localhost>kate
ERROR: KUniqueApplication: Can't determine DISPLAY. Aborting.

So i remember way back when I had Mandrake it would spit out a message saying sometihng about DCOP after I typed kate and eventually a kate editor window would pop up, allowing me to edit the file as root.

But I get that error when i try to do the same thing now, and when I try to fool around with dcop I get the error as I described before...
anyone know how I can do this? I just want to edit stuff with kate (ie not vi or mcedit) or run konquerer as root when I am logged in as another user.

root@localhost>dcop --user "<taylor>"
WARNING: Cannot determine home directory for user <taylor>!
Please check permissions or set the $DCOPSERVER variable manually before
calling dcop.
ERROR: No active KDE sessions!
If you are sure there is one, please set the $DCOPSERVER variable manually
before calling dcop.
