Get yourself a live CD like Knoppix, type: 'photorec' from within the directory where you want the restored files to be restored. Make sure it has allot of free space because you can only specify the format type, not an exact file name to be recovered, so you'll get a big pile of files that can plug a drive. You can also install testdisk in your Linux distribution, photorec comes with testdisk, if you don't want to do the Live CD thing. You can also look into Foremost data carver.
