Custom kernel does nothing

I've just tried to compile my own custom kernel for the very first time. Everything went well during compiling, but when I try booting with it, nothing happens. Where can I see what goes wrong?

When you say that nothing happens - do you mean that it stops at initialising your BIOS? Or that it gets to your boot loader, but no further, or it prints something on the screen after this and then stops? If it prints anything at all on the screen, can you tell us what it is please?

It gets to my bootloader. I can still choose my old kernel without problems. Selecting the new kernel doesn't do anything at all. Not even printing something to the screen.

I ran lilo after copying my new kernel etc. to /boot and altering my lilo.conf. It returned no errors.

Code:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
prompt
timeout = 1200
# Override dangerous defaults that rewrite the partition table:
change-rules
  reset
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
vga = 773
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz-ide-2.4.33.3
  root = /dev/hda3
  label = OldLinux
  read-only

image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda3
  label = Linux
  read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends

If you can select your old kernel and it boots properly, then the problem could be that you don't have support for all of your hardware compiled into the new kernel. If you have the sources for your old kernel installed (probably under /usr/src/linux-2.4.33.3) then you can copy the .config file to your new kernel's source directory and run make oldconfig instead of just make. Then install it the same way and re-run lilo.
