creating a bootable floppy from a bootable machine on a NON Linux machine

Title should be:

creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine

Hello,
I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk.
(which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??)
I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive.
I have even converted the image file to an iso file.
I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?

Would appreciate some answers to this at the earliest.

Regards

Code:
dd if=/name/of/the/floppy/file of=/dev/fd0
should do it. I don't think you need an .iso for a floppy.

By NON Linux, you mean the old Compaq is running Window$ ?

What kind of boot floppy is this ?

Maybe try:

What do you mean by converted the image to an ISO file? Most associate an ISO file with a CDROM image which is not the same thing as a floppy disk image.

Use the rawwrite for windows utility which will copy an image file to a floppy disk.

Hello,

Thanks for your replies. Here are some more clarifications.

Sorry about the confusion of the iso image. I did that to make a CD bootabl)e (from the floppy image and then try to copy the bootable image to the floppy on the Compaq machine (windows mc). THe windows machine can see the CD drive but I cannot boot from the CD on this compaq machine. (No option is dos).

The bootable floppy that I would like to create is for dsl (linux) from the floppy bootable image that I downloaded from the dsl (damnsmalllinux) site.
Though I do have a laptop with a fedora installation I cannot run commands like dd if=/name/of/the/floppy/file of=/dev/fd0 since it does not have a floppy drive.

I only have the bootable image but how do I get it onto a floppy disk. How do I create the bootable floppy from the bootable image on the NON-LINUX machine (windows 98). The floppy drive exists on the Compaq machine which now has Windows 98 (old Compaq Deskpro 2000) on it.
Hope I am able to convey the issue that I am facing.

The rawwite for windows utility as posted in my previous thread will copy the image to a floppy disk.

Hello,
Michael, thanks for your reply. The rawwrite program did work ..in the sense it copied and created a bootable floppy.
However on booting the machine with it ...I got an error saying boot failed.
Finally I was able to boot the CD that I had created using the dsl iso image via another utililty called sbminst.exe. One boots the floppy created and then the program gives you a further option to boot via the CD ROM.

I am trying to make a bootable floppy using the terminal that I can open in dsl that is opening in Live CD mode but dont know exactly how to do it via the command line.

In normal linux the command would have been mkbootdisk /dev/fd0 or something like that. However there is no such command in dsl. I noticed a command mkboot but did not know how to use it because it asks for a rootpartition and a kernel.

mkboot -r rootpartition -i kernel. Can someone let me know how to find the required values for the -r and -i options.

Also was wondering why the floppybootimage downloaded from the dsl site and using rawwrite did not work.

Thanks in advance
