Create Key Combination/Binding

I am looking for a method I can create a key combination or macro of some sort. I am attempting to setup an unused key on the keyboard, such as F12, to launch an application. I am aware of GNOMEs 'Keyboard Shortcuts' but those are predefined fields that don't pertain to me. I have a script I wish to run whenever I press a certain key (i.e. F12). Any help would be apprecaited.

KDE has a feature which permits associating a hotkey with a script or other program.

Sorry I did not stress this in my original post, but I am using GNOME. Thanks!
