Crackling sound after kernel update/compile - AC97 SuSE 9.1
Following my faux pas here I'm starting a new thread (apologies to flayzernax and thanks to Vlad-A).
To repeat the original text:
Quote:
...if I recompile the kernel (I don't know what I'm doing -- I just followed the instructions here) or do a kernel update through YOU, I end up with constant crackling in the background, but otherwise sound is fully functional. It's annoying, because I daren't update the kernel now. If anyone knows how I can start to track this issue, while still being able to roll back to the original kernel easily, I'd be glad of the help.
Sad news. This is a known problem with suse. There seems to be many audio problems with the 2.6 kernel. Trust me, I don't get sound or I get buggy sound on almost every 2.6 OS.
This is a very old thread, but I figured that since I've now solved the problem, it could just help someone, sometime...
Open alsamixergui. You get tons more channels than in KAMix. Mute "Surround Down Mix". That was the cause of the crackle for me. Perhaps if you were trying to get 5.1 support, this wouldn't help, but for bog-standard stereo it's fine.
