CPU Load averages and higher pings

I run a Linux Server with a P4 3.0 Ghz processor, 1,5 GB Memory and 2x80GB Hdd SATA RAID-0

The only CPU consuming proces is a public Mohaa Spearhead Server. From about 18-20 players the CPU load averages tend to exceed 1.00 and causes pings to go up in the game. Is this a CPU problem? Is the load to big for that CPU?

The server only requires 150 MB Memory.

In general the CPU load shows a wave pattern... from 0.2 to 0.95 and back.

Only with loads over 1.00 the pings go up and in general then there are at least 18-20 players at the server. The server has a 100 Mbit connection.

Any ideas what causes the overall ping rise of all players?

18-20 users on one ethernet segment can cause collisions if the game they are all running sends many packets.

A collision is when two machines attempt to send a packet at the same moment. There should be collision lights on your hub.

There is no Hub. The server is located in a Datacentre with a 100 Mbit Uplink.
