could not open session

Running Redhat 7.3 in heavily networked environment.

Environment has NIS; nsswitch.conf says:

passwd: files nis

Modified /etc/group and /etc/passwd with changes for group, groupid.

Ran pwconv, grpconv

greeted with "could not open session" when I try to launch xterrm.

Above works fabulously on Solaris, other OSes. What gives?

Thanks in advance

Corwin
