Permanent photographs?
It is my understanding that if you want to print with archival ink, do not buy HP. HP's black ink is permanent, but not the color ink. If anyone has proof otherwise, I'd love to know, because we've looked for HP archival ink and could not find it.
Canon printers print well, but can be complicated to use.
Epson and Lexmarks are pretty good printers. Canon and Epson offer archival ink.

@DOTT.EVARISTI,
You might check out LQ's hardware compatibility list. Click the HCL link at the top of this page.
@cmnorton,
Thanks for the info. I didn't know there was a difference. Do you know of any links discussing the basics of archival vs non-archival ink? I couldn't find anything with a quick Google search. (Plenty of articles mentioning the term but I didn't see any discussing the issue.)

All due respect to cmnorton, but most people don't know or care about archival ink, especially when buying a home printer. My HP PSC 1315 works perfectly on ubuntu 7.10 with HPLIP drivers over CUPS- inexpensive, prints and scans beautifully, and will print gorgeous pictures right from my digital camera with pictbridge. I think that model has been replace with the PSC 1510; all the PSC line work well.
