convert video_ts files to avi

Hi, I have some files ready to burn to DVD, however I prefer to simply drop an avi file onto a usb stick and play from that. Is it possible to convert the video_ts file to an avi file? I know there are plenty of linux based utilities for converting video formats but I have never come across one for this purpose.

What do you mean exactly by a "video_ts file"? Are you referring to a dvd disc image, or a VIDEO_TS directory that was ripped from a dvd, or perhaps the .vob files and such that are found in that directory?

Most of the tools that can rip a dvd can also also work directly on a disc image or VIDEO_TS directory. You just need to set either the iso file or the directory containing it as the device name. Assuming the program doesn't have some other way of accessing them already, of course.

transcode

thanks both. Yes the files are on disk not on DVD and transcode does the job.
