Convert video to slow motion

I am trying to slow down a video using mplayer. I can play it slower using the -speed option, but I want to save the output. I tried doing

mplayer -speed 0.5 -dumpstream file.mpg

but the stream.dump file is the same thing (original speed). Is there a way I can do this?
