Does it do it on other .rpm files, or just that one?

Do you get this in xterms or on the command prompt? If you do then it might just be some crazy ls colour settings - I assume its possible to set such attributes as blinking, although I've never tried. Check the man page for ls

cheers

A red background and blinking white text indicates a broken symobolic link. The file you have isn't actually an rpm, but a reference to one somewhere else. Or rather in this case it's NOT somewhere else...

no... that wouldnt make sense because first installed say...gnucash.rpm...
then i installed guile.rpm then when i looked at the console and then it was doing it...

gnucash.rpm of course was an rpm file but not a symbolic link...

Yeah, you can make text blink, and if it's happening on a per-filetype basis, it's probably a dircolors thing. "info dircolors" as suggested before.

Are you sure it's not a symlink (i.e., "ls -l gnucash.rpm" doesn't point anywhere else)? It does sound reasonable that something red and blinking would be trying to warn you of a problem.

Foreground and background colors, as well as attributes (blinking, bold, etc.) can be set by filetype or extension. Type "dircolors --print-database" to view your default settings. See if the .rpm extension has it's own init string; if it does, and the string contains "05" (the blink attribute), you've found the cause. If not, I've no friggin idea why it's happening. I'm also not at my Linux box, so I can't check it out any further right now.
