Post console

im running rh 7.3 and im trying to install nvidia drivers, it says that you have to boot directly into the console and not be in x window. this may seem really stupid but i cant figure out how to boot directly into the console?

Hi
at boottime hit ctrl+x (if you use lilo)
enter the right label (default =linux) and runlevel 3 like;
linux runlevel 3 then enter there you go

update; for bypassing the grub bootloader read this;
http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/...ing-single.html
but type; runlevel 3 instead of single

good luck

Hi
U can edit inittab file and in it set the default run level 3.
search for runlevel 5 in that file.

also, if you boot to runlevel 5, you can hit "ctrl-alt-delete" to get back to console... (I think... I've never booted to runlevel 5)

Well, actually Adam, as far as I've ever tried, it doesn't.

CTRL ALT DELETE usually reboots my systems
CTRL ALT BACKSPACE, if I booted to RL5, will just restart the X server, not kill it.

To kill it without editng that file, I CTRL ALT F2, login as root, and then:
init 3
and that kills it.

But I too never boot into RL5 anymore, so it's been a while and some of my syntax may be wrong there.

Cool
