Question connecting to the internet with external ntl modem

Hi,

I have a 150k external modem with ntl. I don't know if my modem is ISDN, ASDL, Cable etc. Also when you set it up it asks for a host address, if i leave this as the default will I be charged from another company or extra on top of my normal bill or will it still connect through ntl and charge me as normal?

Thanks In Advance

You just have regular NTL broadband. You need to set up your system to get an IP via DHCP. You can do this with the command:

dhcpcd -t 10 -h NTL_ACCOUNT_USERNAME -d eth0

presuming you have the modem connected via eth0 of course. There are other packages and other methods depending on how you are set up. Generally you shouldn't have any trouble connecting with NTL. I suggest you have a look at tldp.org; there are several howto's and mini-howto's which cover this issue in more detail.

Oh, I forgot to mention...put this command in your boot scripts so that it runs each time your system reboots. If you enter the information during the system install this will probably all be set up for you.

And no, you definitely wont have to be paying anything extra.

my modem is connected with USB. I managed to get it to connect using the ASDL setting but thats what has asked me for a host name. I thought that if the host name was left as default it would be connecting to a different ISP, this is why I thought that it may cost extra or give me another bill on top.
