connecting on text mode

Hi

I want to be able to connect to the internet before i start x . I read some ppp howto but it's just too complicated for me , so I have four quickie questions :

- Is it less safer to browse the web on text mode (or the contrary?)
- Minicom is not safe ? what programs "are" ?
- Who surfs the web in text mode only ? why ?
- How can i setup this ? do i really need to know my DNS ?

well thanks for any reply

Just out of curiousity ... which steps are you
taking from X to dial-up?

And yes, you should have set up a name-server :}

Cheers,
Tink

I don't know why you think it's unsafe to browse the web in X. As long as your not logged in as root it's not unsafe. In text mode there is a great lack of support for just about everything to do with browsing.

what's wrong with minicom?

if you setup ppp with the scripts it uses to establish a connection you can start it on the command line using pppd.

Some distros are different, but if you have ppp-on then it should do it once ppp-setup has configured the pppscript and options files

thank you . I'll look into it . I have enough information to begin searching . I read the thread and i was wondering , can i use the same scripts you posted ?
etc/ppp/options.demand
/etc/ppp/pppscript

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
quote :

and I have the pap-secrets file with the user and password
that's all I need for it to work
etc/ppp/options.demand
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

where is the pap-secrets file , should i create one ?

BTW
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know why you think it's unsafe to browse the web in X

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

i don't , just wanted to try it out and see how it works
