Connecting Nokia 6021 to Compaq 2120 running Slackware 12.0

I would like to be able to download my sms's instead of tediously zapping one by one on the phone or getting rid of the whole lot in one go. But even with a Nokia CA-42 cable the phone is not recognised. Can anyone point point me in the right direction?
