Conflict between du and df, audacity

I am having a few problems with my OS.
Using Debian Wheezy.
Today I opened audacity and it gave me a warning to choose another tmp directory because of low space.

According to df:
Code:
joe@crunchbang:/$ df -h /
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use Mounted on
/dev/disk/by-uuid/2012072d-7342-494d-821f-62b0a04cfccd 49G 48G 0 100% /
According to du:
Quote:
joe@crunchbang:/$ sudo ls -d *|sudo xargs -I {} du -hs {}
7.3M bin
17M boot
0 dev
8.4M etc
87G home
0 initrd.img
0 initrd.img.old
115M lib
16K lost+found
41G media
4.0K mnt
179M opt
0 proc
29M root
764K run
12M sbin
4.0K selinux
4.0K srv
0 sys
8.0K tmp
3.1G usr
3.4G var
0 vmlinuz
0 vmlinuz.old
According to du I have about 7G used but df says I have 48G taken. I'm sure I haven't installed that much, so why is df and other programs reading this?

I have also had problems with rsync. I have been doing incremental backups for the last 10 days and today when I ran the backup it removed the backups except 2015-10-07. I tried to run it again and still wouldn't work. I also tried to umount the external hard drive I'm using, and linux tells me it's not mounted.

What is going on?

Thanks,

Joe

What kind of file-system do you use?

Thanks for the help syg00. I looked at the thread. I never thought of looking in the mount point.

I unplugged the external hard drive, but /media/root_backup/2015-10-07/ was still listed as a backup with 41G

I deleted /media/root_backup and make a new directory. Mounted the external hard drive, and found my lost backups.

I must have did a backup 2015-10-07 without the external hard drive mounted.
