./configure


Some will you please help.I'm a newby.Im really new to linux and im tryin to install a simple program called jabber. I decommpressed the file then i went to do./configure nothign happened then i did ./configure "file " file name" still no result.the i just type the file rname and all i got was "file name" is a directory.so how do i get this to work? thanks in advance

but what should happen is log in as root
cd to the uncompressed dir
then type ./configure
then the configure script will check your system out and say ok or no go at the end. may be a little more criptic than that but then if it is good you should do
make
then
make install
this will make all the programs so they match your system then install it.
the you can add the path to the program to your users path
and run it.

Note: you don't use the root account until you come to the "make install" step-
cd to newly created folder
./configure (maybe with options - check the README and/or INSTALL files)
make
then su
enter root password
make install
at the end of the installation exit

If you do the whole thing as root, when you try to use it as a user the chances are it will be locked down for the use of root only.

or, you won't be able to remove the directory you make(d ... made .. whatever) in because the binaries are created as root so you can't remove them.

This is of course only a problem if you make in your ~/ directory because if you make in /usr/src you can't read or write unless you are root anyway.
