configuraring mailx without name server

Hi

I am having a hard time configuring mailx in linux, the situation is as follows

an intranet:
linux server with sendmail daemon
microsoft exchange server as mail server

I have to configure mailx in linux so it can send mail to intranet users (basically a monitoring system, when file system is 80% send mail for example) using exchange server. So one of my collegues who configured the samething in Solaris told me; edit /etc/hosts and add an entry such as

ip of mail server mailhost

I followed his suggestion.
The problem is the mail doesnt go out, it stays in the linux box, I received mails from sendmail saying that ithe mail cannot be delivered because it cannot resolve the mail address, says Name Server unknown, time out

OK, I understand that this is logical, obviously it cannot know how to resolve something which he never knew about it or there is not a path helping him. The problem is in this intranet there is NO Names Server so how on the earth I can make this work? Do I have to edit sendmail config files? Any /etc files?

Thank you

You need to allow the mail server to do DNS lookups somehow. Without them it will not know what the MX is. You could also configure sendmail's SmartHost feature to forward all mail to a mail server that can do DNS lookups.
