computer freezes, any ideas where to look for cause?

I have a laptop running Debian. This computer has worked fine for me for over a year, and now its getting flaky on me. I just purchased a wireless card and installed it last week. After this install (which worked pretty much out of the box) my computer has gotten weird. At first everything was fine and dandy, left the computer on for a couple days, nothing happend. Then one day I accidently let the battery die, and it hard booted. So I reboot it, let it run through fsck, and once again everything appears dandy. But, this time after only about 5 minutes it totally locks up on me. Nothing works, so I hard boot it once again. I go through this about 10 times before realizing one correlation, every time it crashed, I was browsing the web in Opera. So I remove Opera, and use Mozilla, and it appears to work fine, goes for a couple hours, no problems. So I decide to try an old version of Opera, and it pretty much immediatly crapped on me. So I'm thinking, "Good, I know its opera". So I reboot, and am browsing in Mozilla with no issues. I leave it on while I go to class tonight, and come home to a frozen computer. This time, though, its frozen on the screen saver, when every other time it has frozen while I was doing something. I have disabled power management in the BIOS, but besides that, I can't think of anything else to try. Suggestions welcome.

well my computer has been running for approximatly 2 hours with absolutely no hitches. i have not been using any web browsers, but i have been consistently pinging to make sure everything is still a go. i'm still looking for reasons behind this freakish behaviour.

To be safe start some hardware diagnosis software to see if you have a problem there. One free easy program not related to any OS is memtest 86. Check it out and run it a long time against your computer.

well, i was able to fix the problem, although i'm still not exactly sure what did it.

i recompiled my kernel from scratch, reinstalled my pcmcia-cs, reinstalled linux-wlan, and now everything is fine. computer has been running for days, with no probs.

i dunno what happend, i'm guessing something in my pcmcia was conflicting with something in the kernel, or something.

thanks for the reply anyway. i'm sure thats a very good utility i will keep it in mind for next time ;)
