The only one I know of is http://squashfs.sourceforge.net/ but it makes it so its read-only.. why would you need to do this on an active drive or filesystem? If your trying to save space, I'd suggest making backups or just simply buy more space, hard drives are cheap nowadays.

You can use gzip and you can latter view your files.

trickykid, you forgot to mention hard drives are huge too than a about a decade ago. Hard drives these days have a capacity scorching 400 GB. Soon there will be hundred terabyte hard drives.

I thought I did mention this when saying... "I'd suggest making backups or just simply buy more space, hard drives are cheap nowadays."

Buying more space indicates hard drives are larger and cheaper..

It will still be a while before we hit "hundred terabyte hard drives" but a single terabyte is only a couple of years away if hard drive technology keeps progressing at its current rate.

programs will get increasing larger too, the always have, and always will. Unless people keep writing pure assembly.

I'm sure media will get even bigger too. The demand for space is, and i believe, always will continue growing.
