Complex performance problem

Hi as long as i remember myself as a linux user (suse 8.1) I remember all the x environment kde with apps to be really slow

I have a celeron 2Ghz with 1GB RAM and 1GB swap space (free command never showed thas swap space is used)
Today I have suse 10 with kde 3.5 installed.... and the problem is that is really slow... For example mozilla firefox is too slow when opening new tabs or switching between them... Also kaffeine some times are really slow when palying dvd,... Sometimes konqueror needs big time to launch as well as korganizer....
I am wondering if this a kde problem , perhaps kde is too heavy for my pc and it is better to use gnome for example (But plz take in mind that kde was slow from 8.1 in the same system i have now)
I also think that this can be problem regarding applications.. parhaps firefox is causing problems.. So i have switch to java 1.5 anf firefox 1.5 (when i pressed help->abou mozilla version to check version the new window took more than 3 secs to appear!!!) Still i have the same problems with firefox

I am also wondering if this is a suse problem.. Maybe suse is running so many processes and the system cant afford this load... So perhaps i should try removing some of them...

I want really to hear your voice in my problem...
Conclusion: I dont think my system is so obsolete for running kde .. We are talking about linux and not windows ... I dont know if u have similar problems or if i am the only guy on earth

If you really only have 1mb of RAM, then no wonder, but I doubt it, I hope it is 1Gb, which should be more confortable.
What is the output of 'free'?
