compilling kernel 2.4.18

Ive just built a new kernel for the first time in ages, and just wondered if anyone could answer this problem.

having done make xconfig, make dep, make bzImage, make modules , i expected the new kernel to be found at

~/linux-2.4.18/arch/i386/boot/bzImage

and indeed there is such a file.

however, there is also a file called

~/linux-2.4.18/vmlinuz

which is 3 times as big as the bzImage file. which one is my new kernel? ( if its the vmlinuz file i need to have another look at the config because it looks **far** to big to me ( 1.8 Meg ).

thanks.

Both, the bzImage is just a sell extracting compressed version of vmlinuz, either can be booted to. bzImages are usually used by default these days so as to keep the disk usage down if you have a separate tiny /boot partition (which I highly recommend). Also, the biggest use of the bz is for a floppy boot disk.

Its not far too big either, kernel sizes have gone absolutely kazoo since 2.0.x, especially if you leave too much goop in. My current home rolled vmlinuz of 2.4.18 is a whopping 2 Megs, but I added nothing as modules.

Cheers,

Ah - thanks for clearing that up.

Its just a bit weird when help files tell you to rename bzImage to vmlinuz when you cp it to /boot/

anyway,
cheers
