compiling tuxracer with audio support

I want to install tuxracer on my Slackware 9.1.
SDL came packaged with Slack but not SDL_mixer. So I downloaded the SDL_mixer sources compiled them and installed SDL_mixer with prefix /usr/ (thus I have the libraries in /usr/lib and the headers in /usr/include).

Then I got the tuxracer 0.61 sources and when I run configure I get this message:
Checking for Mix_OpenAudio in -lSDL_mixer... (cached) no
*** SDL_mixer not found. Configuring without audio support.

Anyone has an idea?
I checked that Mix_OpenAudio was defined in SDL_mixer.h and it is. Also when I execute 'whereis libSDL_mixer', I get a correct answer. Thus I don't understand how tuxracer 's configure cannot find it.

Thank you.

I've tried getting version 0.61 to work on Slack 9.1 for the past 2 weeks!! I already have the Full version of tux racer I bought. I do have slack 8.0 and I'm gonna put it back and see if 0.61 will work with it.......if not I know where some earlier versions of slack are---7.0 and down might try those also......

Well I managed to make it work on Slack9.1. My problem is just that it compiles without sound support because the configure script can't find SDL_mixer???

Finally it works. I just modified the configure script to trick it into thinking that I had SDL_mixer (which is true). I changed the NO by a YES to make the test (that I didn't completly understand) uneffective.
I now have tuxracer with sound and music.
But does that mean that there is an error in tuxracer's configure script? Or maybe it's due to gcc3.2 and Tuxracer being old is supposed to be compiled with 3.9x???
