How do I config kernel to get the 8390.o module ?

How do I properly install the 8390.o module? What do I have to set in the kernel config? It seems to compile in the /usr/src/linux/drivers/net directory, but I can't get it to install the module in /lib/modules/2.4.18/net when I run make modules and make modules_install

All I want to do is install the 2.4.18 kernel with the common procedure:
make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install

and end up with the compiled module, 8390.o in the /usr/modules/2.4.18/net directory.

Firstly, check that the module is actually compiled - i.e. you have a file called 8390.o in

/usr/src/linux/drivers/net/8390.o
/usr/src/linux/modules/8390.o
