compiling in alsa drivers?

i just built a new kernel and i decided to compile my alsa drivers directly in, instead of as modules. the problem i have is that for some reason, the "dummy" sound card is the card being used(no sound). i tried running alsaconf and it couldnt find any sound cards, which is wierd because everything works fine with my old kernel that has the drivers compiled in as modules.

edit:
it also works fine when i rebuild the new kernel with everything the same except make the alsa stuff as modules.
