Compiling a Kernel

Hi, im a Linux newbie and I have Caldera OpenLinux 2.4 and it doesnt support the "Pegasus" module which I need to install my usb ethernet network card.

People have told me if I upgrade my kernel to the newest version I will then have this module available so I downloaded the right module and everything but the first time I attempted to compile it I messed up my Linux and had to re-install.

This time I want to do it right and I pretty much need instructions up to every detail, thanks if anyone could guide me through this.

One thing that I think is glossed over in that howto:

When you're happy with your nice, new working kernel, keep a backup copy of your /usr/src/linux/.config file. It will save a lot of time should you decide to upgrade your kernel again in the future.
