compiler for SuSE 9.1 personal
I cant figure out how to install a compiler for suse. I read on here how to do this using add/remove software but i dont see Gcc or make. I cant find an ftp to install these either. I hope this is the right forum because there isnt one for suse.

You need to install "gcc", and have installed 'binutils' and 'glibc-devel'
go to add remove software, select search from the "Filter" pulldown. type gcc and "Search".

Yes install those and right below you should see "gcc" & "gcc-c++"
One the other q. I would just use yast for rpm's included on the cd only and install others from the command line.

No, you have SUSE Personal, which does not include Gcc or make on the CD. You are going to have to download the binaries from somewhere else on the internet, or else consider investing in SUSE Pro.

Please post you full command you are using to install `glibc-devel` or are u using the CD/Yast?
(I find it hard to believe that glibc-devel requires glibc-devel !!! Are you sure you didn't have a typo above?)

Why don't you install the Professional version via FTP? No one ever seems to take this route for some reason, although it clearly states that you can on most sites to do with SUSE????? It works way better than personal.
