compile new linux kernel

Hi
I want to compile a new Linux Kernel (2.6.10) and then install it.
I want not to any special Linux distrubtion, in other word, I want too boot system with a boot loader and then compile a new kernel (stored in CD) and then install it.
Is it possible?
I want to know how compiled the first kernel? And where (in what environment)?
Thanks

I don't know, but this might help
http://mandrakeuser.org/docs/mdoc/re...ng-kernel.html

about the bootloader:
if your using grub, you can change which kernel is the default for bootup.

To change the default kernel that grub boots,
open the file:

/boot/grub/grub.conf

all of the kernels should be listed in this file.
There should be an option at the top of the file that reads something like:

default=1

All this means, is that if you have two kernels listed, grub will boot the second one listed.
(Notice that the number is 1, this is because grub includes the number 0.)
If the kernel you want to be default is the first on the list it should look like this:

default=0

If you have three kernels installed and you want the third one to be default it should look like this:

default=2

and so on...

hope this helps

I don't know that it is possible to do what you are asking. The standard kernel needs to be compiled in an existing *nix environment, i.e., you can't do it with MS Visual C++, for instance. While it would be tecnically possible to build a "bootstrap" program, with the necessary environment and tools to do what you ask, I doubt it has been done since the early days of Linux.

Why not just install Linux From Scratch, or Gentoo, or Slackware?
